8 Quick SEO Tips You Can Use to Fuel Your Website

July 26, 2012 by Tanya Beaudoin

A website without SEO is like a car without gas. You could have the most amazing car but without fuel it will just sit in your garage collecting dust.  The same goes for your website, your awesome website will be no use to you if you don’t get any traffic – and for traffic you need SEO. It would be a complete shame to waste the car or your website!

So how can you make sure your site is generating the traffic you need?

Here are 8, easy to implement, SEO tips you can use to fuel your website.

#1 Build Internal Links

Link to other pages on your site from within your body content. Ideally use your keyword phrases as the link – for example use “plumbing services” instead of click here.  Don’t forget to create internal links from your blog posts to other content on your site too.

#2 Archive your email newsletters on your website

After you have sent out your email newsletters archive the content on your website.  This is a great way to build your site content and resources.  IF you don’t want to archive the whole email try repurposing the content as a blog post.  Be sure to optimize the content as you would any other page on your site.

#3 Create a XML Sitemap

Make it easy for the search engines to find all the pages on your website by using an XML sitemap.  If you are using WordPress there are several plugins (WordPress SEO, Google XML Sitemaps, and more) that will do this for you.

#4 Write a blog post

Fresh content will help improve your search engine rankings. So get writing! (Or hire a copywriter.)

#5 Build Inbound Links

Inbound links help give your site authority but it is really important that the sites linking to you be relevant.  One good quality link is much better than a bunch of links from questionable sites.  In fact, poor quality links can actually hurt your SEO efforts.

#6 Optimize each page for one or two keyword phrases only.

Don’t try to optimize each page for multiple phrases, it will be ineffectual.  Match the keyword phrases to the content on the page.  Sometimes this means breaking your services pages down into several pages so you can maximize the effectiveness of your SEO efforts.

#7 Use social media to link to your content.

Share your blog posts and other pages on twitter, facebook, pinters, linkedin and more.  This helps build inbound links and the search engines are using social media activity as a measure of relevancy.

#8 Check your site for broken links and pages not found.

Use Google webmaster tools (or any other service) to check for and fix any broken links and page not found errors on your site.
